John Clegg, Star of Dad’s Army and It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Dies at 90

John Clegg, the beloved actor known for his role in the BBC sitcom Dad’s Army and as Gunner ‘Paderewski’ Graham in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, has passed away at the age of 90.

He died peacefully in care in August 2024 and a private funeral will be held on August 29 in West Sussex.

Clegg was a familiar face on British television, appearing in the 70s series Hogg’s Back and as Clifford Howes in Crossroads: Kings Oak.

More recently, he played an unnamed elderly man in the 2001 film Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Tributes have been pouring in for Clegg, including from author and Bafta member Morris Bright, who expressed his sorrow on X, saying, “We are very sorry indeed to hear that La Di Da Gunner Graham, actor John Clegg, has gone to that great concert party in the sky, aged 90.”

Clegg was married to co-star Mavis Pugh, 20 years his senior, until her death in 2006. They both appeared in You Rang, M’Lord? and Are You Being Served?.
